A few things about Naeem Abbas Rufi from someone who lived in the same apartment building

NAEEM ABBAS RUFI SE MA’AZRAT KE SAATH

Watching Naeem Abbas Rufi at Coke Studio singing with Meesha Shafi took me back to 10 years of long lost memories.

Back in 2004-2007 I lived in Gulshan-e-Iqbal near Aladdin park in an apartment building “MADINA BLESSING” . Those days while I was just 16 years old, I was madly in love with a girl “S” . She lived in the same project and was also my tuition fellow. She was so so so much gori. Her brother was the goon of our project but still nothing could stop my love for her. I improved my handwriting to impress her because she used to borrow my registers. Her balcony opened in the compound where we used to play cricket and every evening she used to come to her balcony and watch me play cricket. I was a fast bowler and I quote

Bowling karatay waqt woh balcony mein aajaye to batsman ko bowled karna mujh per waajib hojata tha

TWIST

And then Naeem Abbas Rufi used to show up like an “ILAICHI IN BIRYANI”. He lived in the same project but in different block. Every day he used to come to play with us and in full bharam he was like

“TUM LOOG NIGHT MATCH TO RAKHO BAQI BAT BALL AUR LIGHTS KA KHARCHA MAIN DEKH LUNGA FIKAR NAHI KARO”

His claims used to motivate us for the time being but slowly we realized he was actually a TOPI. All the apartment teenagers hated him and prayed he never stop by when we are playing because then it won’t matter if we are in the middle of a match and in crucial position. Rufi will just demand a whole new match with team of his own choice using the resources of unemployed teenagers (bat, ball, wicket etc) and will leave whenever he want.

The thing we always hated was that if anyone of us managed to bowled him on first ball he would refer to it as

“TRY BALL”

Never attended calls when we organized night matches due to his demands. . . Never. . .

I always asked people

Yeh Rufi bhai ke konsay songs hain maine to aaj tak nahi sunay

And then I found out k he sang a number of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s songs. Then in Ramadan when Amir Liaquat used to recite “Ramzan As Salam” and Najam Sharaz came up with “Naa Tera Khuda Koi aur Hai” I also saw Rufi sahab with “Wohi Khuda hai”

Then I left the apartments in 2007 and forgot about it. Maybe a few times I heard the names Naeem Abbas Rufi and it clicked in my mind. I am not much of a guy who watched morning shows so didn’t knew he has been singing there regularly.

NOSTALGIA

But yesterday I watched the song “AAYA LARIYE” of Coke Studio Season 9 and looking at Naeem Abbas Rufi gave me all my teenage memories back.

Now that girl “S” is married having 3 kids, her goon brother is a decent man now. I was a failure back then but now Alhamdullillah a Qualified guy. But Naeem Abbas Rufi still looks the same except for the fact that those days he was having a weird hair cut copying Abhijeet Bhattacharya having a few cuts a little bit above his ears.

RESEARCH

So I conducted a bit of research about Naeem Abbas Rufi and the discovery of the following pics was enough to shock me

In my research I also found out his songs giving tribute to Late Legend Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and they were so amazing that I must say he should have sung “Afreen Afreen” instead of Rahat. Giving him a mehndi song was like wasting his talent and keeping him underrated. A guy whose voice can give you goosebumps should not be wasted on Mehndi songs.

Anyway the beautiful Meesha and powerful Rufi were able to give a new life to this song.

SORRY FOR THE LONG POST. HERE IS A PIC TO CHEER YOU UP
