Eleven years after earthquake of 8th October 2005

11 Eleven years after the earthquake

I still remember the day in 2005 . I was a student of 1st year and was studying in Masterjee coaching and that day we were there in the morning for extra class when we were informed of the disastrous earthquake. The earthquake claimed approximately the lives of our 80,000 Pakistanis.

The news was a great shock for us and some of us even started crying in the class even imagining about the horrors our fellows have faced.

Its magnitude was estimated to be 7.6 on the magnitude scale. The earthquake didn’t affect Karachi as such but a few minor shocks were enough to scare the shit out of us those days. I lived on 8th floor at that time in an apartment building near Aladdin Park. Multiple times we climbed the stairs of 8 floors in the middle of the night just because of a sudden noise or a rumor. Number of times our apartment residents stayed in the ground just because of the fear of death.

THE UNITY

The times were hard but the unity our nation showed at that time was something you don’t usually witness. Everywhere we could see trucks loading drinking water, food, clothes and anything they could find for the people of affected regions. People were donating generously and donation camps were full even in schools, colleges and universities. Young children were seen collecting donations. University students were seen leading campaigns to deliver the help to victims.

But nothing was enough. Nothing could ease the pain of people who lost their loved ones in the earthquake.

LIFE GOES ON

Pakistanis really tried their best to help the victims but with the passage of time everything is forgotten. Slowly we started forgetting about the horrors and moved on with out lives. But still after 11 years There are many who still awaits rehabilitation and compensations . They still need our help. I wish we could still show the same unity for all the issues our country is facing.
